Quote:
At 10:05 this morning, the Skerries Coast Guard team were tasked by the Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) to assist a kitesurfer in difficulty. Concerned members of the public on the South Beach, Rush had contacted the Coast Guard on 999 to report that a lone kitesurfer appeared to be in serious difficulty some 200 metres off the shore. The Coast Guard’s Sikorsky helicopter, Rescue 116, based at Dublin Airport was also immediately tasked to the scene. The Skerries lifeboat was also requested to assist.

Both the Skerries Coast Guard team and the Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the scene within minutes and quickly located the kitesurfer. The adult male’s limbs had become tightly tangled in the lines of the kite. He was unable to free himself and as a result, his movement in the water was severely restricted. Fortunately, the kitesurfer was wearing a suitable buoyancy aid which kept him afloat. Conditions on scene were very difficult with Northwest winds gusting force 7 to 8.

The Coast Guard helicopter launched a winch operation and successfully rescued the kitesurfer from the sea. He was then landed safely on the shoreline. The Skerries Coast Guard team cut the kitesurfer free from his lines and provided medical assistance. Fortunately, the kitesurfer was uninjured and suffering only mild hypothermia.

WOW, that is scary. And it happens more often than you might think.

I've personally seen people get fingers sliced off by lines, people hog tied around their ankles and dragged upside down, lines tangled wrapped around harness hooks, wrapped over their neck, full body wrap "sushi roll", leashes wrapped around limbs resulting in nasty spiral fractures of bones and fingers. These are VERY serious problems!!!!

When you are in the water with loose lines sloshing around YOU WILL GET TANGLED if they are swirling around you and your are swimming thru them. Sometimes wrapping your lines on the bar may not seem necessary, but it is often the smartest thing to do. You must know how to do this effectively, and do not wait for the shit to hit the fan to figure it out.

I ALWAYS carry a knife....TWO knives in fact: one scabbard style knife mounted on my front hip and tethered with a lanyard long enough to reach arms length, and a line cutter that is in a side pocket on my harness, also tethered. I "daisy chain" the lanyard to keep it compact and put one thin wrap of electrical tape to keep it from unravelling when I don't want it to. You must keep the knife clean and sharp, you can use a corrosion protectant , vaseline, or something similar

http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-River-Shorty-Knife/dp/B002UPA2FG

I have less faith in the line cutter, but I like a little redundancy. My scabbard knife has a combo blade and will blow thru any lines on your bar in 1 second. The line cutter may not cut thru a leash very easily. We tested it under totally controlled conditions and it took close to ten seconds.

I HAVE USED MY KNIVES A FEW TIMES TO FREE PEOPLE and even if I only used it once that would be enough justification for me.

This small piece of equipment is completely inconspicuous and will not stop you from doing you sickest moves or spoiling your fashion statement. It's a small investment compared to all of your other kit, and cheap insurance.

I also carry a LOUD whistle, also completely inconspicuos, in case I need to get someones attention immediately, or in the dark. IMO this is the best whistle http://www.stormwhistles.com/storm.html

There are other knives that will work. If anyone wants a knife I will bring some over the next time I come to Ireland, or I can send some over.

ride safe

just make sure you lash the scabbard to your harness so you don't lose that. locate it where you can easily reach it with either hand.

if the blade gets a little rusty you can use a wire brush or jab it into some fine sand to clean it up.

I coat my blade with an anticorrosive spray from time to time, and check it every few weeks.

While on the subject of getting tangled in lines. Here is another story from Howth Coast guard blog of a very lucky kiter who, if not for the helicopter thermal imaging could have been in a much worse way.

http://www.howthcoastguard.com/2008/11/18/kitesurfer-rescued-in-dublin-bay/

Quote:
DOLLYMOUNT, DUBLIN (17th November 2008) - At dusk tonight ~16:25, volunteers at Howth Coast Guard Unit were requested to assist in the recovery of a casualty from the sea at Dollymount beach, Dublin. The casualty had been kitesurfing and become tangled in the lines of the kite. With darkness fast approaching and unable to return to shore, on-lookers at the scene alerted the Coast Guard.

Howth Coast Guard responded with a full coastal search team at Dollymount and Sutton Creek. At 17:11 the casualty was located by the thermal imaging aboard Rescue Helicopter 116 and recovered by Howth Inshore Lifeboat. The casualty was transported by the D-Class boat to Howth Coast Guard members on the beach who assisted the casualty until an ambulance handover was available.

Howth Lifeboat issued a statement to the Irish Times and gave advice worth repeating:

“The RNLI recommends that when engaging in water sports of any kind that people should make themselves visible by wearing instruments like a personal strobe and by never going out unaccompanied. This man was lucky that we found him in time, it also highlights the need for the 24 hour search and rescue service that the RNLI provide.”

If you spot someone in trouble at sea, on the cliffs or coast, even if you ‘think’ that someone may be in trouble, dial 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
